A post-spring projection of Auburn football's 2024 depth chart
With practices having wrapped up on the Plains, it's a perfect time to take a look at who might fit where for the Tigers later this fall.
(Austin Perryman/Auburn Tigers)
Spring football is already in the books for Auburn in 2024. The Tigers hit the practice field in late February, took off for Spring Break, and went through four more weeks that culminated in the A-Day Game last Saturday.
While it might seem like the Tigers’ spring flew by, the amount of practice access — along with the competitive A-Day Game itself — gave us a pretty clear view on how Auburn would want to line up later this season.
Of course, there’s still a second transfer portal window, where the Tigers could gain some additions to the roster and deal with some departures. The majority of Auburn’s top-10 freshman class was on campus for spring football, but a few notable names will be making their way to the Plains this summer.
With that in mind, here’s The Observer’s annual stab at Auburn football’s 2024 depth chart coming out of spring practices. We’ll cover offense, defense and special teams, giving you a total view of the roster at this point in the preseason.
As always, this is a projection based on what we’ve seen and heard over the last few weeks. Things can and will change, especially in this day and age of college football.
Quarterback
Payton Thorne
Holden Geriner
Hank Brown
Walker White
Thorne entered the spring ball as the favorite for the job, and he exited it in the same spot. This was a good set of practices for Thorne by all accounts, as he looked more comfortable in the offense after a full season as QB1. But the staff won’t name him the starter yet, and it’ll be interesting to see how the younger quarterbacks progress. Geriner is the oldest, and White has the biggest ceiling as the blue-chip newcomer. Yet it feels like Brown has the most upward mobility. As the 6-foot-4 redshirt freshman showed again in the spring game, he can really sling the ball down the field.
RB Damari Alston (Austin Perryman/Auburn Tigers)
Running Back
Jarquez Hunter
Damari Alston
Brian Battie or Jeremiah Cobb
Hunter should be the lead dog in the running back room for a second straight season. Alston looked healthier this spring, and his ability to finish runs with power will always earn him some quality touches. Battie and Cobb are on the same line in this projected depth chart because it felt like we saw the sophomore just as much as the veteran. In an offense that might want to use the running backs more in the passing game, Cobb has a lot of added potential. The big question will be how the Tigers spread the wealth here under new offensive coordinator and position coach Derrick Nix.
Wide Receiver (X)
Cam Coleman
Camden Brown
Summer Arrivals: 5-star Perry Thompson, 4-star Malcolm Simmons
