The second week of Auburn football fall camp is officially underway, with the Tigers returning to the practice field Friday morning after an off Thursday.
Saturday will be an important mile marker for the preseason, as Auburn will head to Jordan-Hare Stadium for a scrimmage that will be open to the media and donors.
Before all of that, Hugh Freeze had his second press conference of camp. He spoke for more than 20 minutes about virtually every position group on the roster and his overall view of what he’s said has been a sharp fall so far for the Tigers.
Here are some No-Huddle Notes from what he said Friday morning, starting with his insight on the sharpness and physicality of practices on the Plains:
Practices have been sharp through the first week, which Freeze said was “shocking” to him. A roster that had the vast majority of its players here either last season or earlier this year for spring ball has been able to really drill down on the how instead of just the what in practices. Freeze said he likes the “good back and forth” that is going on between the offense and defense.
If there’s one major thing that worries Freeze, it’s how much physicality should be allowed in fall camp. He said that there have been several moments where things have gotten too chippy for his liking, but it at least hasn’t been in any after-the-whistle extracurriculars. “I guess you can go the route of, you know, not having a lot of contact, but I just don’t know that you can win in this league without having some physical practices in camp. And it scares me to death, truthfully, because we need to stay healthy.”
