It’s a tradition every year here: Anyone can hear what the Auburn football head coach said at the podium at Media Days by watching SEC Network or finding a video online.

But the better information comes away from the cameras.

Hugh Freeze was in Dallas on Thursday for his second run through SEC Media Days as the Tigers’ head coach. Before he took the main stage, though, he talked exclusively to Auburn’s local beat writers.

It’s a way to get the real inside Auburn stuff in the summer, as the “big room” at Media Days is usually dominated by national reporters and people who cover other teams in the league. (It’s why the event exists.)

With the SEC going to the Lone Star State this year to honor the arrival of Texas and Oklahoma, yours truly did not pay the big money to make the trip.

Fortunately, Freeze and Auburn’s media staff conducted a Zoom interview with those of us who stayed back on the Plains to save the cash for the upcoming season. (As an independent outlet that wants to cover all Auburn football and basketball games, we’re beyond grateful for this move.)

Freeze’s thoughts on several position battles for the fall

During his interview Thursday afternoon, Freeze was asked about the battles that feel the most competitive heading into fall camp — which will start in exactly two weeks, on August 1.

Freeze proceeded to run through almost every position group on the roster. Here’s what he said about each spot, along with our analysis:
