Auburn had quite a week when it came to the transfer portal. Following the end of the spring semester on the Plains and the recent news that one-time waivers will be granted to transfers this year, five Tigers — Jaren Handy, Jay Hardy, Chris Thompson Jr., Chayil Garnett and Kamal Hadden — entered the portal in a seven-day span.

It’s been a while since Auburn picked up anybody from the portal, with the signings of Northwestern edge rusher Eku Leota and West Virginia cornerback Dreshun Miller both happening several months ago. Some Auburn fans might be wondering when those fortunes will change.

The answer: Perhaps real soon.

There are a number of factors at play here. First, Auburn has to keep in mind the 25-man hard cap for incoming classes, which include new transfers. It’s not just as easy as X number of players out, X number of players that can come in.
