What is this, exactly? Why should I subscribe?

Welcome to The Auburn Observer, a newsletter and podcast that goes inside the stats, strategy and stories of Auburn football and men’s basketball.

If you’re new to Substack, stories will be emailed directly to your inboxes after you subscribe and still live on their own website, in case you want to share links or read past posts in the archive.

Subscribers get three or four newsletters per week and a podcast, which has two new episodes each week.

The foundation of The Auburn Observer is in-depth analysis of Auburn football and men’s basketball — featuring film rooms, weekly mailbags, postgame observations and inside-the-numbers stories. This is not an outlet focused on breaking news or recruiting scoops, but we want to still give you something about the Tigers that you won’t find anywhere else.

Plus, we try to have a lot of fun in the process.

Who are you?

The Auburn Observer was founded by Justin Ferguson and Painter Sharpless.

Justin has covered Auburn sports in some fashion every year since he was a junior in college in 2013. He previously wrote about Auburn for The Athletic, SEC Country, Bleacher Report and The Auburn Plainsman. After he was laid off from The Athletic due to COVID budget cuts, he started The Auburn Observer in September 2020 so that he could keep writing and talking about the Tigers for a living.

Painter was the original co-host and producer of The Auburn Observer podcast. He also edited all the newsletters. Painter worked in sports radio for several years and once hosted a show with Justin in the Auburn-Opelika area. It was both award-winning and award-losing.

Dan Peck joined the Observer in the spring of 2023 as a podcast co-host. Dan is an established radio voice in the state of Alabama as both the host of The Drive on ESPN 106.7 in Auburn and the play-by-play voice of Troy women’s basketball.

Alright, so how much does this cost?

Access to all stories and podcasts at The Auburn Observer is $6 per month or $60 for a full year.

The early-week episodes of the podcast, usually posted on Sundays, are free for everyone and available wherever you listen to podcasts.

Subscribers also get a premium podcast episode during the week, usually on Wednesday or Thursdays, plus our bonus podcast episodes.
